ARTIST'S STATEMENT

Polly Little

The process of painting is what I love, the subject matter changes depending on what else I am discovering or experiencing. Of late that includes my first food paintings. I have focused on different subjects over the years: spending a lot of time making wood cuts that were physically attached to the canvases while also making at least one print of each wood cut and combing that with drawings that relate to the woodcut animal/s. ”Some of my previous paintings were Images or moments relaying a coming of age saga young people experience as they expand their circle of friends and begin to discover their own identities.
Combining woodcuts with canvases and drawing with pastels over woodcut prints on paper created much of the work I have done in the last four years. The relief images on the woodcuts are cut with chisels into graphic depictions of animals. After inking the woodcuts, I attach them to the oil paintings on canvas. The intention is to juxtapose the roughness and flatness of the woodcut images with the visceral quality of oil paint.
I have begun to look at my other passions that have been focused on flower gardening and cooking. Both acts are similar to the process of making art and I want to continue my new series of works that are stills of the extra-ordinainess of fine dining and wine tasting.
